What can you mix with kojic acid?
- Use kojic acid at a different time of day from AHA/BHA peel, one in the morning and the other at night.
- Kojic acid with retinol, tretinoin, adapalene, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or mandelic acid needs care: start slowly or alternate days.
- Kojic acid sits happily next to vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, peptides, copper peptides, bakuchiol, vitamin E, ferulic acid, sunscreen, tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin, snail mucin, centella asiatica and squalane.
What it does
Kojic acid is made by several fungi during the fermentation of rice, the same process behind sake. It grabs the copper ions in tyrosinase, the enzyme that kicks off melanin production, which slows new pigment forming.[1]
Strengths
- A pharmaceutical review summarizes its brightening use and its role in combination formulas.[1]
- A 2022 review of biological activity and safety data supports its use at typical cosmetic levels.[2]
- It is often combined with other brighteners such as arbutin or niacinamide for a multi-pathway approach.[3]
Who it suits
People with sun spots, melasma or post-acne marks who want an over-the-counter brightener, especially in soaps and serums.
Who should skip
Contact allergy has been documented, so patch test before using it on the whole face. It can also be unstable and turn brown with light and air; store it well.[2]
How to start
Kojic acid often comes in soaps, creams and serums. With a soap, lather and leave it on the target area for about thirty seconds before rinsing, a few times a week at first.
With a leave-on serum, apply a thin layer once a day to dark spots or the whole face after a patch test on the jawline for several days. Combine it with sunscreen every morning, because new UV exposure keeps restarting pigment.
If redness, itching or small bumps appear, stop using it: that pattern fits the contact allergy described in case reports. Store the product closed and away from light so it does not oxidize.
Common mistakes: scrubbing hard with kojic soap, using it twice daily from the start, and combining it with strong acids and a retinoid in the same week. Results build gradually over two to three months, so changing products every few weeks makes it hard to tell what worked.
In a year of patch testing at a Kyoto dermatology lab, 5 of the 8 women who had used kojic acid products reacted to it, and their facial dermatitis began 1 to 12 months after they started. The products involved held 1% kojic acid, so tolerating a product for a few weeks does not rule out a later reaction.
