Can you use hyaluronic acid with kojic acid?
The chemistry
Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase by binding copper and reduces melanin production, which helps sun spots and post-inflammatory marks (Saeedi 2019). It can cause dryness and, in some people, allergic contact dermatitis (Nakagawa 1995). Hyaluronic acid adds hydration without exfoliation or pH changes (Papakonstantinou 2012), so it counteracts the drying side of kojic acid. There is no chemical interaction between them. Reviews of kojic acid and its derivatives note that stability is a challenge and that derivatives like kojic dipalmitate are more stable but less studied (Zilles 2022). The appeal of the pairing is simple: kojic acid is one of the more drying pigment ingredients, especially in soap form, and people often stop using it because their skin feels tight. Adding a hydrating step does not boost the pigment effect but makes the routine sustainable for the months that fading takes.
Role
Pigment reduction plus hydration.
Risk
Kojic acid allergy, not the pairing.
Packaging
Choose opaque, airless containers for kojic products.
Common mistakes
Kojic acid often comes in soaps, which are drying and expose a large area to a potential allergen. A leave-on serum applied to dark areas is more targeted; follow it with hyaluronic acid and a moisturizer. Patch test on the inner arm for a week before facial use. Expect gradual improvement over two to three months, and use daily sunscreen. If melasma is the issue, better-studied options include azelaic acid, tranexamic acid and prescription combinations (Austin 2019). Be cautious with unregulated whitening creams, which sometimes contain undeclared steroids or mercury.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Hyaluronic acid serum
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Kojic acid serum on dark areas
- Hyaluronic acid
- Moisturizer
Go slower if
Patch test kojic acid and stop at any itchy rash. Hyaluronic acid is very low risk.
Evidence strength
Limited for kojic acid; good for hyaluronic hydration. No combination trial.

Why is my kojic soap drying even with hyaluronic acid?
Soaps strip oils; reduce use to a few times a week or switch to a serum.
Can kojic acid be used on the body?
Yes, it is commonly used for underarms and knees; patch test first.
Does hyaluronic acid boost kojic acid's effect?
There is no evidence of that; it is purely for comfort.
How can I tell kojic irritation from allergy?
Irritation is dryness or mild sting where applied and fades when you cut back. Allergy is itchy, red, sometimes swollen and can spread; stop entirely and see a doctor.
