Can I use kojic acid every day?
Kojic acid is a well-known brightener with a real allergy risk, so the safest route to daily use is a week of testing on your arm first.
Your routine
AM or PM
- Patch test first (7 to 10 days on the inner arm).
- Start every other day, then once a day if your skin stays calm.
- Wear sunscreen every morning: it's what keeps dark spots from coming back darker.Sunscreen
It depends on four things
Allergy risk
Contact allergy to kojic acid has been reported, especially with repeated use. That's the main reason not to rush.
Product type
Kojic soaps are rinsed off quickly and are less potent; serums and creams stay on and work harder.
Strength
Most cosmetic products contain about 1%.
Sun
As with all brighteners, sunscreen protects your progress.
Getting to daily kojic acid
- Days 1-10Patch test on the inner arm twice a day (AAD method). No itch or redness: move on.
- Weeks 1-2Face, every other evening.
- Week 3+Once daily.
- Month 3Judge dark spots; keep going if improving.
What the research says
- Kojic acid is produced by certain fungi and blocks tyrosinase by binding the copper in the enzyme, slowing melanin production (Saeedi 2019).
- Its main drawback is sensitization: a review of its safety data flags contact dermatitis as the key risk (Zilles 2022), and an early report described several people who developed contact allergy from kojic acid skin care products (Nakagawa 1995).
- The AAD's patch-test method is a simple way to catch that before it shows up on your face (AAD, how to test).
Kojic acid soap
- Kojic soaps are popular for dark underarms, knees and elbows.
- Because they're rinsed off, their effect is modest.
- They can also dry the skin, so follow with a plain moisturizer.
- If the soap stings or the area darkens rather than lightens, stop: irritation can make pigment worse.
If you react
- An allergic reaction to kojic acid usually shows up as itching and small red bumps where you applied it, sometimes a day or two later.
- Wash it off, stop all brighteners, and use only a bland moisturizer until the area calms.
- Once you're sensitized, the reaction tends to come back faster with each exposure, so switch to a different brightener such as azelaic acid or tranexamic acid instead of retrying.
What to watch for
Nothing, or mild dryness.
Slight redness: every other day.
An itchy, red, bumpy rash, which suggests allergy. Don't retry.
