Can you use glycolic acid with kojic acid?
The chemistry
Kojic acid is a fungal metabolite that inhibits tyrosinase by binding the copper at the enzyme's active site, which reduces melanin production (Saeedi 2019). It is usually used at 1 to 2 percent and is often combined with other brighteners. Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, speeds turnover of the outer skin, which helps shed cells already loaded with pigment, and it may help other ingredients penetrate (Kornhauser 2010). On paper this is a logical split of jobs: kojic acid slows new pigment while glycolic acid clears old pigment. Glycolic acid and kojic acid have been used together in melasma formulations for decades. The problem is tolerance. Kojic acid is a known contact sensitizer in a minority of users, and an acid that raises penetration can make that more likely. Irritation also matters more than usual for pigment problems, since inflamed skin can darken further, particularly in medium and deep skin tones. Kojic acid is also unstable and can turn brown in the bottle (Zilles 2022).
Logic
Kojic acid blocks new pigment; glycolic acid sheds old pigment.
Risk
Irritation and kojic acid contact allergy.
Rule
Start one at a time and keep the acid frequency low.
Common mistakes
The usual misstep is buying a strong peel and a kojic serum together and starting both on the same night. If a rash appears, there is no way to know which caused it. Introduce kojic acid first for two weeks, then glycolic acid twice a week. Another misstep is expecting fast results. Pigment fades over months, and sun exposure can undo progress in a weekend. Pairing kojic acid with niacinamide or azelaic acid is a gentler route if glycolic acid proves too much.

Go slower if
Stop kojic acid if itching, redness or a rash develops. Wear sunscreen every day, since glycolic acid increases UV sensitivity and sun undoes pigment gains. Discard kojic products that have turned dark brown.
Evidence strength
Limited to moderate. Kojic acid has smaller trials and reviews (Saeedi 2019); combination formulas exist, but controlled comparisons of the pair are scarce.

Is kojic acid safe?
Generally at 1 percent, though some people develop allergy.
Can I use kojic soap with glycolic acid?
Rinse-off soap has short contact, so the risk is lower, but soaps can be drying.
How long until pigment fades?
Usually eight to twelve weeks.
Should I add hydroquinone too?
Only under a clinician's guidance.
Does glycolic acid help kojic acid absorb?
Probably somewhat, which also raises irritation risk.
Can darker skin use this pair?
Yes, with slow introduction, because irritation can worsen pigment.
