Can you use sunscreen with kojic acid?
The chemistry
Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase by binding the copper it needs, which lowers melanin production (Saeedi 2019). It is widely used in creams and soaps for sun spots and uneven tone. It does not block UV and has known stability and allergy issues: it oxidises with light and air, and it can cause allergic contact dermatitis (Nakagawa 1995; Zilles 2022). Sunscreen is the step that makes brightening possible, by preventing UV-induced pigment (Abdel Azim 2025). Kojic acid's sensitivity to light is a reason to store it carefully and to apply sunscreen over it when used in the morning. There is no direct chemical interaction between kojic acid and sunscreen filters.
Storage
Kojic products oxidise in light; keep them closed and cool.
Allergy
Patch test before facial use (Nakagawa 1995).
Daily SPF
Without it, kojic acid is outpaced by new pigment.
Common mistakes
Kojic soaps are often used on the body in hot climates without sunscreen; that combination tends to disappoint. Apply sunscreen to exposed areas you are trying to even out. Another mistake is applying kojic cream right before sun exposure and then sweating; it can sting and irritate. If you use kojic acid in the morning, let it dry before sunscreen. Finally, if a kojic product has turned brown, it has oxidised and may irritate more. Kojic acid is frequently combined with glycolic acid or hydroquinone in pigment creams; if yours contains an AHA, the sun warning that applies to AHAs applies to the whole product. Hands, forearms and the chest are often treated with kojic soap but rarely get sunscreen, so the spots there persist.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Kojic acid serum (optional)
- Moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Kojic acid serum
- Moisturizer
Go slower if
Stop kojic acid if you develop itching or rash. Avoid on broken skin. Use a tinted sunscreen for melasma.
Evidence strength
Moderate for kojic acid as a brightener and for its allergy risk (Saeedi 2019; Zilles 2022; Nakagawa 1995). Strong for sunscreen (Abdel Azim 2025; AAD).
FAQ
Can I use kojic soap and skip sunscreen?
No, spots will return or worsen.
Is kojic acid photosensitising?
It is not a typical photosensitiser, but it is light-sensitive in the bottle.
How long until spots fade?
Two to three months with sunscreen.
Is kojic acid allergy common?
Uncommon, but documented (Nakagawa 1995).
Morning or night?
Either; night is easier if it stings.
Which sunscreen?
Broad spectrum SPF 30+, tinted for melasma.
Is a kojic acid cream with SPF enough?
Rarely. Most people apply too little of a combined product to get its labelled SPF, so a separate sunscreen is more reliable.
