Can you use kojic acid with centella asiatica?
The chemistry
Kojic acid reduces melanin by inhibiting tyrosinase (Saeedi 2019) but can irritate or sensitise (Nakagawa 1995; Zilles 2022). Centella extracts may reduce inflammation and support the barrier (Bylka 2013; Park 2021). Less inflammation can mean less post-inflammatory pigment, which matters for brightening. There is no known interaction.
Calm skin fades better
Less inflammation, fewer new marks.
Layering
Kojic serum dries, then cica cream.
Limits
Cica soothes irritation but cannot block a real allergy.
Common mistakes
This pairing suits sensitive skin trying to fade spots. Introduce kojic acid slowly. If rash develops, stop kojic acid. Irritation and pigment are closely linked: inflamed skin, especially in medium and deep skin tones, often darkens. That makes a calming ingredient a useful partner for a brightener. Centella extracts reduced inflammatory markers in lab models (Bylka 2013), though human brightening data are lacking. Kojic acid is the active doing the fading, through tyrosinase inhibition, and it works slowly. A practical routine is kojic acid serum, a minute to dry, then a centella cream, morning and night, with tinted sunscreen in the morning. Many cica products also contain niacinamide, which adds a brightening effect of its own. Kojic acid allergy usually shows as itchy red patches where applied; centella will not mask it for long, so stop kojic acid if that occurs (Nakagawa 1995). Avoid applying kojic acid to freshly shaved or waxed skin. Store kojic products away from light because they oxidise and darken. Photograph spots monthly in the same light; change over two to three months is typical.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Kojic acid
- Centella cream
- SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Kojic acid
- Centella cream
Go slower if
Itchy red patches mean the kojic product should go; centella can stay if it was fine on its own.
Evidence strength
Moderate for kojic acid (Saeedi 2019) and limited to moderate for centella (Bylka 2013; Park 2021). Untested together.
FAQ
Can I use both twice daily?
Yes.
Does centella brighten?
Not proven.
Any interaction?
None known.
Sensitive skin?
A good option.
Results?
Months.
Is this good for post-acne marks?
A reasonable gentle choice, with sunscreen.
Can centella cause allergy?
Rarely; patch test.
Can I add a retinoid?
Yes, at night on alternate days at first.
Should I use a cica cream with kojic acid already inside?
That is convenient; just do not add a second kojic product on top.
Can I use this pair around the mouth?
Yes, but corners of the mouth crack easily, so use less kojic acid there.
