Can you use AHA/BHA peel with kojic acid?
The chemistry
Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase (Saeedi 2019) but is associated with irritation and allergic contact dermatitis (Nakagawa 1995; Zilles 2022). A peel temporarily increases skin permeability (Kornhauser 2010). Applying kojic acid immediately after could increase both irritation and the chance of sensitisation, since more of the compound reaches living skin. Spacing them lets you keep both: kojic acid on most days, a peel occasionally.
Spacing
No kojic acid for 1 to 2 days after a peel.
Allergy
Peeled skin may be more easily sensitised.
Sunscreen
Mandatory for both.
Common mistakes
Kojic acid is often used in combination products and soaps; check whether your cleanser contains it and skip it on peel day. Dark spots treated too aggressively often darken further. If you develop itching or eczema-like patches, stop kojic acid permanently, since allergy tends to recur. A dermatologist can patch test if you are unsure what caused a reaction. Kojic acid and peels are both common in body brightening routines for knees, elbows and underarms. Those areas are prone to friction irritation, so peel them less often than the face, and never right after shaving. Kojic acid in creams is usually 1 to 2 percent; soaps deliver much less because they are rinsed off. Store kojic products away from light, because oxidised kojic acid turns brown and may irritate more. Expect fading to take two to three months, and track it with photos rather than daily mirror checks.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Kojic acid (not the day after a peel)
- Moisturizer
- SPF 30+
Evening
- Peel night: peel, rinse, plain moisturizer
- Other nights: kojic acid, moisturizer
Sample week
Resume kojic acid two days later.
Go slower if
Never peel over broken, sunburnt or freshly shaved skin, and treat an itchy rash after kojic use as a reason to quit kojic acid.
Evidence strength
Moderate for kojic acid with documented allergy risk (Saeedi 2019; Nakagawa 1995; Zilles 2022). Moderate for peels (Kornhauser 2010; Ravikumar 2022). Timing is a precaution.
FAQ
Can I use kojic soap after a peel?
Wait two days.
Is kojic acid an exfoliant?
No, it is a pigment inhibitor.
How often to peel?
Every two to four weeks.
Will this help melasma?
Possibly, with sunscreen; irritation can worsen melasma.
What if I react?
Stop kojic acid and see a doctor.
Can I mix kojic acid powder into my peel?
No; home mixing changes pH and strength unpredictably.
Is a kojic acid peel different?
Some peels add kojic acid to the acid mix; follow the same timing and do not add a separate kojic serum that night.
