Can you use ceramides with squalane?
The chemistry
The outer skin barrier is like bricks and mortar, with ceramides making up roughly half of the lipid mortar by weight. They help organise the lamellar layers that hold water in and keep irritants out, and low ceramide levels are linked to dry skin and eczema (Coderch 2003; Meckfessel 2014). Topical ceramides, ideally blended with cholesterol and fatty acids, help restore that structure. Squalane is a different kind of lipid: an occlusive-leaning emollient that sits on and among the surface cells, reducing water loss and smoothing rough texture (Huang 2009). One replaces missing structural lipids; the other reduces evaporation while they settle in. Neither is active in a way that could interact.
Function
Ceramides repair barrier structure; squalane is the emollient seal.
Best for
Dry, flaky, eczema-prone or retinoid-dried skin.
Order
Ceramide cream first, a few drops of squalane on top if you need more.
Common mistakes
Many ceramide creams already contain squalane, so check the label before layering more oil. Another error is relying on ceramide serums with a single ceramide at a tiny level; barrier repair works best with ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids together. People with oily skin sometimes skip both, but even oily skin can be dehydrated after acne treatments; a light ceramide lotion without extra oil may be the right compromise. And remember barrier repair takes days to weeks, so judge after two weeks of consistent use.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Ceramide moisturizer
- SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser
- Treatment if any
- Ceramide cream
- Squalane drops on dry areas
Go slower if
Very few people react to either, but a fragrance or preservative in the product can irritate eczema. Choose fragrance-free versions if your barrier is compromised.
Evidence strength
Moderate for ceramides in barrier function (Coderch 2003; Meckfessel 2014) and well established safety for squalane (Fiume 2023). No trial compares the pair, though they are commonly formulated together.

Is this enough for eczema?
It can help mild dryness, but active eczema usually needs medical treatment as well.
Can I use both morning and night?
Yes.
Do ceramides clog pores?
They are generally well tolerated; the base cream matters more.
Is squalane needed if my cream has ceramides?
Only if you still feel dry.
Can I use these with retinoids?
Yes, they are a common buffer for retinoid dryness.
Which is better on its own for very dry skin?
A ceramide cream with cholesterol and fatty acids addresses the cause; squalane mostly improves feel and reduces water loss on top.
