How to layer squalane

Layering

Squalane is an oil, so it goes last at night, after moisturizer, or replaces moisturizer on oily skin. In the morning use a drop or two before sunscreen and let it absorb.

Wait time

Let it absorb for a couple of minutes before sunscreen.

Why this order

Oils seal, so they go over water-based layers

Oil applied first blocks serums underneath.

It is stable and non-irritating

An expert panel reaffirmed squalane as safe in cosmetics (Fiume 2023).

Mix a drop into cream

Adding a drop to moisturizer is a simple approach.

Squalane vs squalene

Squalene is the natural unsaturated oil in sebum; squalane is the hydrogenated, more stable version (Huang 2009).

Choosing squalane for your skin type

  • Dry skin can use it nightly over moisturizer as a final seal, especially in winter.
  • Combination skin often does better with squalane only on dry patches or mixed into cream.
  • Oily or acne-prone skin can still use it since it is light and doesn't usually clog pores, but if you notice new bumps, cut back to every other night or apply it only to the cheeks.

Squalane over retinoids and acids

  • On retinoid nights a few drops of squalane on top of moisturizer help with the dry, tight feeling, without sitting underneath and blocking the retinoid.
  • On acid nights, the acid goes on bare skin first, then moisturizer and squalane last.
  • Hair ends and cuticles are other good places for a leftover drop.

Plant or shark sourced

  • Squalane was once mostly sourced from shark liver oil.
  • Most cosmetic squalane today comes from olives or sugarcane, which is worth checking on the label if sourcing matters to you.

Using squalane with sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens can feel drying; a single drop of squalane pressed in beforehand softens that, but too much makes the SPF slide and pill.

Cleansing it off

Because it is so light, squalane rinses away with an ordinary gentle cleanser the next morning; no oil cleanse is needed.

Using squalane every day

  • Daily use morning or night is normal for this emollient.
  • A few drops after water-based layers, or mixed into moisturizer, is enough; more just sits on top.
  • Frequency questions are covered on /can-i-use-squalane-every-day/.
  • The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel reaffirmed squalane as safe in cosmetics as currently used (Fiume 2023).

Morning stack with sunscreen

  • If you use squalane in the morning, keep it under sunscreen: serum, cream, one or two drops of squalane, then SPF once the oil has settled.
  • Too much oil under sunscreen can make the film slide or pill.
  • At night it can be the final seal over moisturizer or over a retinoid night.

Common mistakes

Using it before serums Blocks them.
Too much A few drops.
Over sunscreen Dilutes it.
Skipping sunscreen after morning squalane Oil is not UV protection. Sunscreen still goes last in the morning.

What the research says

  • Squalane is hydrogenated squalene, a lipid naturally present in human sebum, with emollient and antioxidant-related properties (Huang 2009).
  • The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel reaffirmed its safety (Fiume 2023).

FAQ

Squalane before or after moisturizer?

After.

Before sunscreen?

Yes, then wait.

Clog pores?

Generally not.

Can I use squalane every day?

Yes. It is an emollient oil, not an exfoliant, so there is no build-up schedule. See /can-i-use-squalane-every-day/.

Squalane before or after retinol?

Retinol or tretinoin on dry skin first, then moisturizer, then squalane last if you still feel tight.

Does squalane replace moisturizer?

On oily skin a few drops can stand in for a cream. On dry skin use both: cream first, squalane on top.
