Can you use adapalene with alpha arbutin?
The chemistry
Adapalene is a stable third-generation retinoid used for acne, effective and better tolerated than tretinoin in comparison trials (Martin 1998, Thiboutot 2007). By speeding skin-cell turnover it also slowly fades post-acne pigment. Alpha arbutin inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin, and has been studied as a gentler alternative to hydroquinone (Boo 2021). So the pair hits pigment from two angles: arbutin slows new melanin, while adapalene moves pigmented cells out faster and prevents the new spots that cause marks. Alpha arbutin is usually formulated near neutral pH and is rarely irritating, which matters because adapalene already pushes many users close to their tolerance limit. There is no known chemical interaction. Arbutin can go on in the morning or under adapalene at night if it is a light serum that dries quickly. This is one of the lower-risk ways to deal with both acne and the marks it leaves. Compared with combining adapalene with hydroquinone or strong peels, the irritation burden stays low, which matters because irritated skin in medium and deep tones can develop new pigment and erase progress. Alpha arbutin is typically used at around 2 percent in serums, and higher is not clearly better.
Pair logic
Adapalene prevents spots and speeds turnover; arbutin slows pigment.
Irritation
Low added risk from arbutin.
Timing
Morning arbutin or arbutin under adapalene at night.
Common mistakes
Patience is the main requirement. Adapalene takes about twelve weeks to show its full effect on acne, and marks fade over months. Switching products every few weeks makes it impossible to tell what is working. Daily sunscreen does more for marks than any serum, and skipping it undoes much of the work. If you use adapalene's gel form and find it drying, the arbutin serum can go on first in the morning with a richer moisturizer. Keep the evening routine short: cleanser, adapalene, moisturizer. Adding more serums at night is the usual way irritation sneaks in.

Go slower if
Adapalene is not recommended in pregnancy. Arbutin rarely causes allergy, but stop if a rash appears. Red marks, rather than brown ones, respond poorly to arbutin.
Evidence strength
Strong for adapalene in acne; limited to moderate for alpha arbutin (Boo 2021). The pairing has not been studied directly.

Can I put arbutin and adapalene on together at night?
Yes, arbutin first, let it dry, then adapalene.
Does arbutin reduce adapalene irritation?
No evidence that it does.
How long until marks fade?
Usually several months.
Is alpha arbutin safe for darker skin?
Yes, and it is often chosen for that reason.
Can I add niacinamide?
Yes, another low-irritation option.
Will arbutin help active acne?
No. It only targets pigment.
Does arbutin work on old marks?
It helps most with marks still fading.
