How to layer alpha arbutin

Layering

Alpha arbutin is a brightening serum applied after cleansing, before moisturizer, morning and night. It is gentle, so it layers with most other actives as long as sunscreen comes last in the morning.

Why this order

It slows melanin, so it needs time

Arbutin is a glucose-bound form of hydroquinone that inhibits tyrosinase (Boo 2021). It is a patience ingredient.

Where it sits among brighteners

A systematic review placed it among several topical options with varying levels of evidence (Austin 2019).

Watch pH partners

Some formulators avoid very acidic layers right on top. Apply acids on different nights if stinging occurs.

Hydroquinone confusion

  • Because arbutin releases tiny amounts of hydroquinone, some people worry.
  • Cosmetic alpha arbutin at about 2% is widely used, and irritation is rare (Boo 2021).

Building a dark-spot routine around it

  • For post-acne marks and sun spots, a common evidence-informed plan is alpha arbutin morning and night, vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen, and a retinoid at night.
  • Each works on a different step of pigment formation or turnover, and arbutin's gentleness makes it the easy one to keep using daily.
  • Photograph spots in the same light every few weeks; slow fading is easier to see in photos than in a mirror.

Strength and format

  • Most serums use 2% alpha arbutin, often alongside hyaluronic acid.
  • Higher numbers on the front label do not mean faster results, and creams with arbutin simply go in your moisturizer step.

Using it with acids

  • Arbutin and a glycolic or lactic acid can share an evening once both are well tolerated.
  • Put the acid on first, let it dry for a minute, then arbutin, then cream.
  • If your cheeks sting, move the arbutin to the morning instead.
  • Mandelic acid tends to be the easiest exfoliant to pair with it.

Pregnancy note

Because arbutin releases small amounts of hydroquinone, many people prefer azelaic acid for pigment during pregnancy; ask your clinician which suits you.

What the research says

  • Arbutin inhibits tyrosinase and melanosome maturation, reducing melanin production; alpha arbutin is more potent than beta arbutin (Boo 2021).
  • A systematic review of melasma treatments listed arbutin among topical options with limited trial data (Austin 2019).
