Can you use tretinoin with squalane?
The chemistry
Tretinoin has the strongest topical evidence for photoaging and is a cornerstone of acne treatment, but early dryness, peeling and stinging are very common (Mukherjee 2006, tretinoin label). Squalane is the saturated, stable form of squalene, a lipid in human sebum; it acts as an emollient that smooths flakes and reduces water loss, and cosmetic safety reviewers consider it safe and non-irritating (Huang 2009, Fiume 2023). Because it is chemically inert and non-acidic, it does not change tretinoin's activity. It is a practical way to make tretinoin more tolerable, especially for people who find creams heavy. The most common reason people abandon tretinoin is irritation in the first eight weeks, long before the benefits for wrinkles, pigment and acne show. Keeping skin comfortable during that window is therefore part of making tretinoin work. Squalane's light texture is useful because many tretinoin users are also acne-prone and dislike heavy creams, and thick occlusives can feel greasy under the face's T-zone.
Role
Comfort and flake control.
Order
Tretinoin first on dry skin, squalane after.
Pores
Low comedogenic potential.
Common mistakes
Apply tretinoin to completely dry skin, wait several minutes, then press in two or three drops of squalane, or mix a drop into your moisturizer. Some sensitive users apply squalane before tretinoin as a buffer, which may reduce penetration slightly. Squalane also protects the creases around the nose and mouth, where tretinoin tends to sting. In the morning, a little squalane under sunscreen smooths visible flaking. Plant-derived squalane from olives or sugarcane is chemically identical to the shark-derived form. If flaking persists despite squalane, the problem is usually frequency, not moisture. Drop to every other night for two weeks and build back up. Avoid scrubbing off tretinoin flakes with exfoliants; let them shed. For lips and eyelids, which are especially sensitive, keep tretinoin away and use a balm. Squalane also works as a gentle oil cleanser at night before washing, which can be less stripping than foaming cleansers during tretinoin use.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Moisturizer or squalane
- Sunscreen SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser
- Pea-sized tretinoin on dry skin
- Squalane
Go slower if
Avoid tretinoin in pregnancy (Bozzo 2011).
Evidence strength
Strong for tretinoin; squalane is a well-tolerated emollient. No combination trial.
FAQ
Will squalane cause breakouts with tretinoin?
It is unlikely, but tretinoin's purge can coincide with new products; introduce squalane after a couple of weeks.
Is squalane enough as my only moisturizer on tretinoin?
For oily skin perhaps; drier skin usually needs a cream too.
Does squalane reduce tretinoin's effect?
Applied after, it should not.
Should I use squalane or a heavier occlusive like petrolatum on tretinoin?
Squalane suits oily or combination skin; very dry or eczema-prone skin often does better with petrolatum on dry areas.
