Can you use adapalene with centella asiatica?
The chemistry
Adapalene is an over-the-counter retinoid for acne that prevents clogged pores and reduces inflammation (Irby 2008). Its main problem is irritation in the first weeks: dryness, flaking, stinging. Centella extracts support barrier repair and calm inflammation in lab and small clinical studies (Bylka 2013; Park 2021). Centella does not reduce adapalene's effectiveness and has no known chemical interaction. Adapalene is chemically stable compared with tretinoin (Martin 1998), so layering with botanical creams is unlikely to degrade it. Apply adapalene to dry skin, then a centella cream on top, or use centella in the morning.
Buffer
Centella cream after adapalene may reduce irritation.
Order
Adapalene on dry skin, then centella.
Acne
Centella is not an acne treatment; adapalene is.
Common mistakes
Many centella products contain other actives such as niacinamide or acids. Read the label; adding acids early in adapalene use increases irritation. A common mistake is spot-treating with adapalene. It works as a preventive and should be applied thinly over the whole acne-prone area. Use a pea-sized amount. Results take 8 to 12 weeks, and early breakouts are common. If skin peels a lot, use adapalene every other night for two weeks while keeping centella nightly. Centella can also help post-acne redness fade, though evidence is modest. Morning sunscreen remains important, since adapalene can make skin feel more sensitive. Adapalene combined with benzoyl peroxide gels are common; with those, centella is equally useful, though benzoyl peroxide adds dryness and bleaches fabric. Keep the centella product fragrance-free. If skin is still very irritated after a month despite centella and spacing, ask a dermatologist; sometimes a different retinoid or formulation is better tolerated. Avoid waxing areas treated with adapalene, since the skin can lift.
