Can you use vitamin C with zinc oxide?
The chemistry
Topical vitamin C adds antioxidant protection against UV-induced damage, and in one study a vitamin C, E and ferulic acid serum reduced sunburn cell formation, but it is not a sunscreen (Lin 2005). Zinc oxide is a mineral UV filter; it is stronger in the UVA range and is often combined with titanium dioxide for broad protection (Smijs 2011). The AAD recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher (AAD). The two do different jobs, so they complement each other.
Order
Vitamin C serum first, sunscreen last.
Coverage
Zinc oxide covers UVB and much of UVA.
Amount
Use enough sunscreen and reapply outdoors.
Common mistakes
Let the vitamin C serum absorb for a minute or two before sunscreen, so the mineral layer goes on evenly. Do not mix them in your hand: diluting sunscreen with serum lowers the protection you get. Zinc oxide sunscreens can leave a white cast; tinted versions with iron oxides help deeper skin tones and also block some visible light. Mineral sunscreens are often recommended for sensitive skin, which also makes them a good match if vitamin C makes you tingle. Reapply sunscreen every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. Vitamin C does not need reapplying. Which vitamin C you choose matters more than people expect. L-ascorbic acid at 10 to 20% has the most research but is acidic and can tingle; derivatives such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate are gentler and more stable but less studied. Either sits comfortably under a mineral sunscreen. If your sunscreen pills or balls up, use less serum, wait a little longer, or switch to a lighter moisturizer between the two layers.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Vitamin C serum
- Moisturizer (optional)
- Zinc oxide sunscreen SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Moisturizer or your night treatment
Sample week
Both every morning.
Go slower if
Stop vitamin C if it causes a rash. Sunscreen should be the last step and should not be mixed with other products.
Evidence strength
Moderate for topical vitamin C photoprotection (Lin 2005). Strong for zinc oxide as a UV filter (Smijs 2011; Abdel Azim 2025). The combination is standard morning practice.

Does vitamin C boost my sunscreen's SPF?
No. It adds antioxidant protection, but the SPF on the label is what you get.
Can I mix vitamin C into my sunscreen?
No. Apply them as separate layers.
Is a mineral sunscreen better than a chemical one with vitamin C?
Both work. Mineral can be easier on sensitive skin.
How long should I wait before sunscreen?
A minute or two, until the serum feels dry.
Do I need to reapply vitamin C?
No, only sunscreen.
Will zinc oxide react with vitamin C?
No meaningful reaction is expected when they are applied as separate layers.
