Can you use tretinoin with hypochlorous acid?
The chemistry
Hypochlorous acid is part of the body's own immune defence. A 2025 review describes antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and healing properties and its use in acne, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and after procedures (Haralović 2025). It does not exfoliate. Tretinoin is the active doing the heavy lifting for acne and photoaging, and its main side effects are dryness and peeling (tretinoin label). Adding a non-exfoliating mist does not change that.
Gentle
Hypochlorous acid does not exfoliate.
Order
Mist, let it dry, then tretinoin.
Evidence
Supportive step; tretinoin does the real work.
Common mistakes
Hypochlorous acid sprays are popular with people on tretinoin who want a cleansing or calming step that will not sting. Mist it after cleansing and let it dry fully before tretinoin, because tretinoin is best applied to dry skin. You can also use it during the day, for example after the gym or mask-wearing. Do not expect it to replace an acne treatment: the evidence is mostly from clinical settings, wound care and small studies, not large acne trials. If you use benzoyl peroxide as well, apply it at a different time from tretinoin unless your product says otherwise. On nights when tretinoin feels too much, a simple fallback is cleanser, hypochlorous acid mist and moisturizer, then return to tretinoin the next night. Hypochlorous acid mists are also used on pillowcases and phone screens by some people with acne, though there is no good evidence that this helps skin.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Hypochlorous acid mist
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Hypochlorous acid mist (let dry)
- Tretinoin, pea-sized
- Moisturizer
Sample week
Tretinoin on your usual schedule; the mist can be used daily.
Go slower if
Tretinoin is prescription-only and should be avoided in pregnancy. Stop hypochlorous acid if it stings or causes a rash.
Evidence strength
Limited for hypochlorous acid in everyday acne care (Haralović 2025). Strong for tretinoin (tretinoin label). The pairing is low risk because hypochlorous acid is not an exfoliant.

Does hypochlorous acid deactivate tretinoin?
No evidence suggests it does, especially if you let the mist dry first.
Can it help tretinoin irritation?
It may soothe, but a moisturizer is the main fix.
Is hypochlorous acid the same as bleach?
No. Skin sprays are a much milder, low-concentration form.
Can I use it twice a day?
Yes.
Does it treat acne on its own?
Evidence is limited; use a proven acne treatment too.
Can I use hypochlorous acid after a facial or peel while on tretinoin?
Pause tretinoin for a few days after any peel or procedure and follow your clinician's aftercare; hypochlorous acid is often part of that aftercare.
