Can you use AHA/BHA peel with squalane?
The chemistry
Squalane is a saturated, stable hydrocarbon derived from olive or sugarcane, used as an emollient. Safety reviews find it non-irritating and non-sensitising at typical concentrations (Fiume 2023), and it can help with skin softness and, in some formulations, delivery of other ingredients (Huang 2009). After an AHA/BHA peel, skin feels tight and is more permeable (Kornhauser 2010). A few drops of squalane on its own or over a plain moisturizer reduces water loss without adding fragrance or actives. Because it is stable and does not oxidise easily, it is unlikely to irritate.
After rinsing
A few drops of squalane, alone or over moisturizer.
Inert
Stable and rarely irritating (Fiume 2023).
Acne-prone
Usually tolerated.
Common mistakes
Don't apply squalane before a peel; oils can create uneven penetration. After the peel, it is one of the simplest recovery steps. Some people mix squalane into moisturizer, which is fine. Squalane alone is an emollient, so on very dry skin pair it with a humectant cream. Squalene, with an e, is a different, less stable compound in sebum; products sold as squalane are the stable form. Squalane's main advantage on peel night is what it lacks: no fragrance, no acids, no plant extracts and little potential to oxidise into irritating compounds. Huang 2009 described squalane's use in delivery systems, which is a reminder not to layer it over another active straight after a peel, since it may help other ingredients penetrate. Over a plain moisturizer it is safe. In the days after, flaking can look worse on dry skin; a drop of squalane smooths it without picking. Combination skin can apply squalane only to tight areas such as cheeks.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Moisturizer with squalane
- SPF 30+
Evening
- Peel night: peel, rinse, squalane
- Other nights: moisturizer and squalane
Go slower if
Avoid peels on broken skin. Squalane rarely causes reactions.
Evidence strength
Moderate safety evidence for squalane (Fiume 2023; Huang 2009). Moderate for peels (Kornhauser 2010; Ravikumar 2022).
