Can you use azelaic acid with squalane?
The chemistry
Azelaic acid treats acne, rosacea and pigment through anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and tyrosinase-inhibiting effects (Sauer 2023, Liu 2020). Its gel forms in particular can feel drying, and many users report flaking in the early weeks. Squalane is the hydrogenated, stable form of squalene, a lipid that skin naturally produces. Safety reviews find it non-irritating and non-sensitizing in cosmetic use (Fiume 2023), and it acts as an emollient that softens skin and slows water loss. Lab work has also explored squalane as a carrier that can help other ingredients penetrate (Huang 2009). For this pairing, the point is comfort: a few drops after azelaic acid reduce tightness without the heaviness of a thick cream. Squalane is generally considered non-comedogenic, which matters because azelaic acid users often have acne. There is no chemical interaction, since squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon that does not react with acids. This pairing suits people with oily-dehydrated skin: they produce plenty of sebum but feel tight after treatment, and heavy creams feel greasy. Squalane offers just enough slip without adding much oil. In winter, it can also be mixed into a moisturizer rather than layered separately, which some people find easier.
Role
Light emollient to reduce azelaic dryness.
Order
Azelaic acid first, then squalane or a cream with squalane.
Pores
Generally non-comedogenic.
Common mistakes
Squalane alone does not hydrate; it seals. On very dry skin, apply a water-based moisturizer or a humectant serum after azelaic acid, then squalane on top. A single drop or two is enough for the face. Applying too much leaves a shine and may cause sunscreen to slide off in the morning. People with rosacea often find squalane less irritating than fragranced creams, which is why it shows up in rosacea routines, but heat and spicy food still matter more than any product for flushing. Avoid confusing squalane with squalene: the unsaturated form oxidizes and may contribute to clogged pores.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Azelaic acid
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen
Evening
- Gentle cleanser
- Azelaic acid
- Squalane (2 drops)
Go slower if
Azelaic acid can sting at first. Squalane derived from olives or sugarcane is preferred over shark-derived products for sustainability. Stop if a rash appears.
Evidence strength
Moderate to strong for azelaic acid; good safety data for squalane (Fiume 2023). The combination is supported by general principles, not trials.

Will squalane cause breakouts?
Uncommon; it is considered non-comedogenic.
Can I mix squalane into azelaic acid?
Possible, but layering is more predictable.
Is squalane good for rosacea?
It is often well tolerated.
Morning or night?
Night is best to avoid shine under sunscreen.
Squalane or ceramide cream?
Ceramide creams repair more; squalane is lighter.
Does squalane affect azelaic absorption?
Not when applied after.
How long does a bottle of squalane last?
With two drops a night, a 30 ml bottle typically lasts several months.
