Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid that the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology acne guideline strongly recommends (Reynolds 2024). The two labels we checked agree on the first half of the routine and differ on the second. Both say to wash gently, pat dry and wait 20 to 30 minutes, because applying to skin that is still damp raises irritation (Renova label, Mylan label). Renova, the 0.02% cream for photoaging, then advises waiting an hour after application before putting on other products or cosmetics (Renova label). The Mylan cream and gel label for acne gives no interval and instead suggests a noncomedogenic moisturizer, or one with sunscreen, every morning after washing (Mylan label). Ceramide creams are a sensible partner, since ceramides make up a large part of the lipid barrier that retinoids tend to dry out (Meckfessel 2014).
