Can you use peptides with alpha arbutin?
The chemistry
Alpha arbutin is a brightening ingredient made of hydroquinone bound to glucose, studied for more than 30 years as a way to reduce melanin production (Boo 2021). In a 30-person split-face pilot trial, a cream with 5% alpha arbutin and 2% kojic acid improved melasma about as much as a prescription triple combination cream on melanin index and severity scores over 12 weeks, with less redness and stinging (Tantanasrigul 2025). Peptides target lines rather than pigment. Palmitoyl pentapeptide reduced fine lines against a plain moisturizer in a 93-person, 12-week split-face trial (Robinson 2005). Because one handles tone and the other texture, they do not compete for the same job, and no source reports a chemical clash.
Chemistry
No reaction reported between arbutin and cosmetic peptides.
Irritation
Low for both. Arbutin dermatitis is described as rare.
Order
Thinner serum first, then the thicker one, then moisturizer.
Common mistakes
Buying several brightening serums at once and adding a peptide on top turns a two-step routine into five layers, which makes it hard to tell what is working or what caused a rash. Start with these two alone for a few months. Also check the arbutin percentage. The melasma pilot study used 5% alpha arbutin with kojic acid, so its results do not tell you what a 2% serum will do. Daily sunscreen matters more than either serum for pigment.

- Gentle cleanser
- Alpha arbutin serum
- Peptide serum
- Moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser
- Alpha arbutin serum
- Peptide serum
- Moisturizer
Go slower if
A review notes that arbutin rarely causes dermatitis and advises caution because hydroquinone may be generated during product use (Boo 2021). If you are pregnant or have melasma that keeps worsening, talk to a dermatologist before relying on cosmetic serums.
Evidence strength
Limited. Both ingredients have small controlled trials (Tantanasrigul 2025; Robinson 2005), but the pair has not been studied together.

Does alpha arbutin turn into hydroquinone?
A review says hydroquinone may be generated during use of arbutin products, which is why it advises caution (Boo 2021).
Will peptides help dark spots?
The main peptide trial measured lines and wrinkles, not pigment (Robinson 2005).
How long should I try alpha arbutin?
The melasma pilot ran 12 weeks plus a 4-week follow-up (Tantanasrigul 2025), so give it about three months.
Can I mix them in my palm?
There is no evidence on mixing them in your hand. Layering one after the other is the usual approach.
