Can you use mandelic acid with centella asiatica?
The chemistry
Mandelic acid is a bulky alpha hydroxy acid. Its size slows penetration, so it delivers exfoliation and some antibacterial benefit with less stinging than glycolic acid, and in comparative peel studies it treated mild to moderate acne with good tolerance (Dayal 2020; Garg 2009). Centella asiatica contains triterpenoids such as madecassoside and asiaticoside. Laboratory and small clinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and collagen-supporting effects (Park 2021; Bylka 2013). The pairing has a clear logic for reactive, breakout-prone skin. You get the clarifying effect of an acid and then a calming, hydrating layer to finish. Chemically there is nothing to worry about: centella extracts are neutral to mildly acidic and are not destabilised by mandelic acid.
Why it works
An exfoliant followed by a calming botanical suits sensitive, acne-prone skin.
Order
Mandelic acid on dry skin, wait a few minutes, then a centella serum or cream.
Caveat
Centella's soothing effect in people is supported by small studies, not large trials.
Common mistakes
Centella products, often labelled cica, range from pure extracts to heavily scented creams with essential oils. The fragrance can undo the calming purpose, so read the ingredient list. Another misconception is that centella makes it safe to use acids more often; it may make skin feel better, but it does not protect the barrier from overexfoliation. Keep mandelic acid to two or three nights a week at first. If your skin is already inflamed, sunburned or freshly treated, skip the acid that night and use centella alone. Finally, centella belongs to a plant family that can occasionally cause allergic contact dermatitis, so a new product deserves a short patch test.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Centella serum
- Moisturizer
- SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser, pat dry
- Mandelic acid 5 to 10%
- Centella cream
Sample week
Mandelic acid three nights a week; centella daily, morning and evening.
Go slower if
Go slow with rosacea or eczema: one acid night a week to start. Stop centella if you develop itching, since reactions to plant extracts, though rare, are reported. Avoid acids on broken skin.
Evidence strength
Moderate for mandelic acid in acne (Dayal 2020; Garg 2009). Limited to moderate for centella, mostly mechanistic and small human studies (Park 2021; Bylka 2013). The pairing is untested.

Can centella replace my moisturizer?
A centella cream can. A thin serum may need a moisturizer on top.
Does centella help acne?
It may reduce inflammation, but it is not an acne treatment on its own (Park 2021).
Can I use both in the morning?
Yes if you wear sunscreen, though acids are more commonly used at night.
What does cica mean?
It is a marketing term for centella asiatica extracts.
How long until mandelic acid helps breakouts?
Peel studies showed change over several sessions; with daily products, give it 6 to 8 weeks.
