Can you use glycolic acid with tranexamic acid?
The chemistry
Glycolic acid is the smallest AHA and exfoliates the outer layer quickly. In a randomized trial of peels for post-acne pigmentation, glycolic and salicylic acid peels improved pigment compared with controls (Ravikumar 2022), and leave-on glycolic acid improves texture and tone (Kornhauser 2010). Tranexamic acid blocks the plasmin pathway that links skin inflammation and UV exposure to melanocyte activity and reduces the vascular component seen in melasma. Meta-analysis supports its role in melasma, topically and orally (Calacattawi 2024), and topical 3 percent cream matched 4 percent hydroquinone in one split-face trial (Yasnova 2024). Tranexamic acid is stable in mildly acidic formulas and rarely irritates. The pairing logic is clear: remove pigment that has already formed while reducing the drive to make more. The caution is glycolic acid itself, which increases UV sensitivity (Kaidbey 2003) and can trigger pigment if it irritates. Tranexamic acid is also commonly combined with in-office treatments. A meta-analysis found microneedling with topical tranexamic acid improved melasma scores more than either alone (Feng 2024), which shows the ingredient tolerates being used on freshly treated skin under supervision. At home, glycolic acid is a far milder way of increasing turnover, and the same principle of pairing turnover with tranexamic acid applies.
Two angles
Exfoliate existing pigment; reduce the signal for new pigment.
Order
Glycolic acid first, tranexamic serum after it absorbs.
Main risk
Glycolic irritation, not tranexamic acid.
Common mistakes
People with melasma sometimes use glycolic acid aggressively, then see melasma worsen because inflammation and heat aggravate it. Keep glycolic acid to two or three nights a week and use tranexamic acid every day. Another mistake is relying on glycolic acid peels alone for melasma; maintenance with a tyrosinase inhibitor or tranexamic acid and strict sun protection matters more. Also keep heat in mind. Saunas, hot yoga and long cooking over a stove can darken melasma independently of UV, and no topical pair will fully counter that. A cool, consistent routine works better than intense bursts. Keep glycolic acid as the optional texture lever, not the daily driver: two or three leave-on nights, tranexamic acid most other nights and mornings, tinted SPF every day (Kornhauser 2010; Calacattawi 2024). Clinic microneedling with tranexamic acid is a supervised protocol in some melasma papers (Feng 2024); that is not a green light to push glycolic acid or TXA into at-home needled skin. If melasma darkens after a glycolic push, stop the acid, keep tranexamic acid and sunscreen, and cool the routine rather than adding more exfoliation. Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Tranexamic acid serum
- Tinted sunscreen
Evening
- Cleanser
- Glycolic acid (2 to 3 nights)
- Tranexamic serum, then moisturizer
Go slower if
Stop glycolic acid if you get burning or new darkening. Topical tranexamic acid is not the same as oral, which needs a prescription and screening for clotting risk. Pregnancy data for tranexamic acid are limited.
Evidence strength
Moderate for each (Ravikumar 2022, Calacattawi 2024). The pair has not been tested together.
What we recommend
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner
7% glycolic acid, fragrance-free, sold by Amazon. No tranexamic acid product passes our audit yet (SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense has no verified listing), so this covers the glycolic acid step only.

Can I use tranexamic acid on non-glycolic nights?
Yes, every day.
Can glycolic acid improve tranexamic acid absorption?
Possibly, but that is not studied.
How long until results?
Expect 8 to 12 weeks.
Is this pair suitable for dark skin?
Yes, with slow glycolic introduction.
Is tinted sunscreen needed?
It helps melasma by blocking visible light.
Can I add niacinamide?
Yes.
Can I use a glycolic acid cleanser instead of a leave-on?
Yes. Rinse-off glycolic acid is gentler and still works alongside daily tranexamic acid.
What is a simple weekly pattern?
Tranexamic acid most mornings under tinted SPF; glycolic acid two or three nights; tranexamic acid on the other nights. Rest if skin stings.
Should glycolic acid or tranexamic acid go first on a shared night?
Glycolic acid on dry skin first, wait until dry, then tranexamic acid, then moisturizer. Many people should not share the night at all.
Can I use a glycolic peel and this serum pair the same week?
Only with spacing. Skip leave-on glycolic around peel night and keep tranexamic acid if your clinician agrees. Peel pair notes: /glycolic-acid-and-chemical-peel/.
Does this pair need a long wait before sunscreen?
No. Morning tranexamic acid, moisturizer if needed, sunscreen last once the serum is dry. Map: /layering-order/.
