Can you use AHA/BHA peel with centella asiatica?

The chemistry

Centella asiatica compounds such as madecassoside support wound healing and reduce inflammation in lab and small clinical studies (Bylka 2013; Park 2021). After a peel, skin is temporarily more permeable and can feel hot or tight (Kornhauser 2010). A centella cream you already use without problems can feel soothing. New products are risky because any reaction is hard to attribute and freshly peeled skin reacts more easily.

Common mistakes

Many centella creams include niacinamide, panthenol and ceramides, which are generally fine after a peel. Avoid those with acids or essential oils. If skin stings with centella, rinse and use a plain moisturizer. Centella does not reduce sun sensitivity, so sunscreen is still needed every morning for at least a week. Centella is sometimes sold as cica balm, a thicker product designed for irritated skin. On peel night, a thin layer of cica balm over damp skin works well for dry types, while oily skin may prefer a centella gel cream. Park 2021 reviewed centella's wound-healing compounds, but most data are from cell and animal models and small human studies, so the benefit after a home peel is plausible rather than proven. The main reason it helps is likely that a simple, soothing moisturizer reduces water loss. Keep retinoids, vitamin C and other acids off for two to three nights, then return to them one at a time. If skin develops crusts, blisters or dark patches, stop peeling and see a doctor.
