Can you use AHA/BHA peel with alpha arbutin?
The chemistry
Alpha arbutin inhibits tyrosinase and has a reputation for low irritation (Boo 2021). A peel speeds the shedding of pigmented surface cells (Kornhauser 2010; Ravikumar 2022). For pigment, the two can complement each other over a week: arbutin daily to reduce new melanin, a peel occasionally to remove some that is already there. A melasma review suggests combined approaches can help when sun protection is in place (Austin 2019). On peel night, though, skin is more permeable and sensitive, and adding a serum gives little benefit and some irritation risk.
Peel night
Arbutin off; plain moisturizer only.
Next day
Arbutin back if skin is calm.
Melasma
Gentle, regular arbutin beats frequent peels.
Common mistakes
Arbutin serums are often formulated with acids or other actives; check the label, since an arbutin serum with lactic acid counts as an exfoliant. A common mistake is trying to speed spot fading by peeling weekly. Irritation is one of the biggest triggers of dark marks, especially on medium and deep skin. Every two to four weeks is usually plenty. Tinted sunscreen every morning is what keeps both treatments working. Alpha arbutin is one of the few brighteners that most people can use twice daily without stinging, so it makes a good long-term base while peels come and go. Austin 2019 found that combination regimens generally outperformed single agents for melasma, but those combinations were supervised. Patch test any new peel along the jaw first. If spots darken after a peel, stop peeling, keep arbutin and sunscreen, and see a dermatologist.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Alpha arbutin
- Tinted SPF 30+
Evening
- Peel night: peel only, rinse, bland cream
- Other nights: alpha arbutin, moisturizer
Sample week
Arbutin can go on that morning but not that night.
Go slower if
Avoid peels with rosacea or eczema. New or changing spots need medical review.
Evidence strength
Moderate for arbutin (Boo 2021) and for peels in pigment (Kornhauser 2010; Ravikumar 2022), with review support for combined approaches (Austin 2019).
