Yes

The chemistry

Benzoyl peroxide kills Cutibacterium acnes by releasing oxygen radicals and does not create bacterial resistance, which is why acne guidelines recommend it alone or alongside antibiotics (Zaenglein 2016, Reynolds 2024). Many people with acne, especially those with medium and deep skin tones, are left with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: flat brown marks that last months after the spot heals. Alpha arbutin is a glucoside of hydroquinone that blocks tyrosinase and slows melanin production, with a better safety profile than hydroquinone (Boo 2021). It addresses the mark, while benzoyl peroxide prevents new spots that would leave more marks. The theoretical issue is that benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidizer, and arbutin is an antioxidant-type molecule that could be oxidized if mixed in the same layer. That has not been studied on skin, but keeping arbutin in the morning and benzoyl peroxide at night, or using a benzoyl peroxide wash, avoids the question. Independent testing reported in 2024 found benzene can form in some benzoyl peroxide products stored in heat; that testing is not among the sources cited here, but storing the product cool costs nothing.

Jobs

Benzoyl peroxide prevents spots; arbutin fades the marks.

Split

Arbutin in the morning; benzoyl peroxide at night or as a wash.

Storage

Keep benzoyl peroxide cool and out of hot cars.

Common mistakes

Many people focus on the marks and underuse the acne treatment. Fading serums cannot keep up if new breakouts keep appearing, so controlling acne comes first. Another mistake is picking at spots, which deepens marks far more than any serum can fix. Benzoyl peroxide also bleaches towels and pillowcases, so use white linens. Expect red marks, which are blood-vessel related, to respond less to arbutin than brown marks.

Your routine

Morning

  1. Cleanser
  2. Alpha arbutin serum
  3. Moisturizer
  4. Sunscreen

Evening

  1. Cleanser or benzoyl peroxide wash
  2. Benzoyl peroxide 2.5 to 5% leave-on (if used)
  3. Moisturizer

Go slower if

Benzoyl peroxide often causes dryness and peeling at first; 2.5 percent is usually as effective as higher strengths with less irritation. Sunscreen is essential, as UV darkens marks. Stop arbutin if a rash appears.

Evidence strength

Strong for benzoyl peroxide in acne; limited to moderate for alpha arbutin on pigment (Boo 2021). The combination has not been tested directly.

FAQ

Can I mix them in one layer?

It is better not to, since benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizer.

How long until acne marks fade?

Often three to six months, faster with sunscreen.

Does benzoyl peroxide cause dark marks?

No, but irritation from it can worsen pigment in some skin.

Is alpha arbutin the same as hydroquinone?

No. It is related but gentler.

Can I use a BPO wash with arbutin?

Yes, that is the simplest option.

Is benzene in BPO a concern?

Reports point to heat as the main driver; store products cool. This is outside our cited sources.
