Can you use sunscreen with tanning oil?
The chemistry
Tanning oils are sold to make skin darken faster or look glossy in the sun. A tan itself is the problem: the FDA explains that the extra pigment in tanned skin is a sign of damage and gives an SPF of only about 2 to 4 (FDA tanning). The American Academy of Dermatology says there is no such thing as a safe tan, because every tan or burn damages the DNA in skin and raises the risk of skin cancer (AAD tanning). For outdoor sun, the AAD recommends a sunscreen with three essentials: SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and water resistance (AAD sunscreen). Many people also use too little; AAD guidance is about one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass, for an adult's body (AAD apply).
Chemistry
No direct conflict, but an oil on top can thin or rub off the sunscreen film.
Risk
High. The goal of tanning oil is UV damage that sunscreen is trying to prevent.
Order and wait
Sunscreen first, about 15 minutes before going out, then any oil. Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
Common mistakes
The biggest mistake is trusting a tanning oil that lists a low SPF, or none, as your sun protection. Check the label: if it does not say SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum and water resistant, it does not meet the AAD essentials (AAD sunscreen). Another is building a base tan to avoid burning later. The AAD calls that a myth (AAD tanning). A third is forgetting reapplication after swimming or towelling off. If you want a bronzed look, the AAD suggests a self-tanner, still worn with sunscreen.
Your routine
Morning
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on all exposed skin
- Wait about 15 minutes
- Hat, shade and sunglasses
Evening
- Shower to remove oil and sunscreen
- Gentle moisturizer
- Check for redness or burns
Go slower if
Children, people on photosensitising medicines and anyone with a history of skin cancer should skip tanning oil altogether. See a doctor about any changing or bleeding spot.
Evidence strength
Strong for the advice, from AAD and FDA guidance and a review of how sunscreens work (Abdel Azim 2025). No study tests tanning oil and sunscreen worn together.
FAQ
Do I put sunscreen on before or after tanning oil?
Sunscreen first, straight onto clean skin, so it forms an even film. Any oil goes on top. No study has tested the order; this follows the AAD advice to apply sunscreen to bare skin before going out.
How long should I wait between sunscreen and tanning oil?
About 15 minutes, the time the AAD suggests before sun exposure (AAD apply). Then reapply sunscreen at least every two hours.
Does a tanning oil with SPF count?
Only if the label shows SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum and water resistance (AAD sunscreen).
Is there a safe way to tan?
Dermatologists say no; a self-tanner with sunscreen gives colour without UV damage (AAD tanning).
