Can you use sunscreen with mandelic acid?
The chemistry
Mandelic acid is a large AHA from bitter almonds that exfoliates slowly, with acne and pigmentation benefits in peel studies (Dayal 2020; Garg 2009). It is often recommended for darker skin tones because of a lower irritation risk, which reduces post-inflammatory pigmentation. Those same skin tones are most prone to pigment from UV. AHAs as a class increase sun sensitivity (Kornhauser 2010), and sunscreen prevents UV-driven pigmentation and photoageing (Abdel Azim 2025). The pairing is simple: mandelic acid at night, sunscreen every morning.
Gentle but not exempt
Mandelic is gentler, but AHAs still increase UV sensitivity.
Pigment
Sunscreen is key to fading marks that mandelic acid targets.
Darker skin
Tinted mineral sunscreens avoid a white cast.
Common mistakes
People sometimes use mandelic acid in the morning because it is gentle. That works with sunscreen but adds exposure. Another mistake is choosing a sunscreen that leaves a white cast and then using too little. Tinted options or modern chemical filters solve this. Mandelic acid is also popular for acne-prone skin, which often means oily skin that dislikes heavy creams. A gel or fluid sunscreen labelled non-comedogenic is usually the best match. If you use mandelic acid in a cleanser rather than a leave-on, contact time is short and the sensitivity effect is smaller, but sunscreen is still sensible because the acne marks you want to fade are UV-sensitive. For melasma or stubborn post-inflammatory marks, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides offers protection against visible light that clear sunscreens do not. Peel studies with mandelic acid involved careful sun avoidance between sessions, so results at home depend on matching that.
Your routine
Morning
- Cleanser
- Moisturizer
- Tinted or sheer SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Mandelic acid
- Moisturizer
Go slower if
Reduce mandelic acid frequency if your skin stings with sunscreen. Avoid on broken skin.
Evidence strength
Strong for sunscreen (Abdel Azim 2025; AAD). Moderate for mandelic acid (Dayal 2020; Garg 2009).

Is mandelic acid photosensitising?
Like other AHAs, it may increase sun sensitivity.
Morning or night?
Night is typical.
Which sunscreen for dark skin?
Tinted mineral or sheer chemical filters.
Can mandelic acid fade dark spots?
It can help, with sunscreen.
How much sunscreen?
Two finger lengths for the face (AAD).
Can I use it daily?
Some can; start with three nights a week.
Does mandelic acid have its own sun warning?
