Can you use salicylic acid with tranexamic acid?
The chemistry
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates and has bacteriostatic properties (Madan 2014), and the 2024 acne guideline gives it a conditional recommendation for acne (Reynolds 2024). Tranexamic acid works on pigment. A meta-analysis of 22 randomized trials found it lowered melasma severity, with topical use having a smaller effect than oral tablets (Calacattawi 2024). The two have not been tested together, and nothing suggests one deactivates the other. The FDA notes that the cosmetic safety panel considers salicylic acid safe when products are formulated to avoid irritation and increased sun sensitivity, or when directions include daily sun protection (FDA BHA page). Sun protection is also central to keeping pigment from returning, so the two goals point the same way.
Chemistry
No known reaction between a BHA and tranexamic acid.
Irritation
Mostly from salicylic acid, especially leave-on products at 2%.
Order
Salicylic acid first on dry skin, then tranexamic acid, then moisturizer.
Common mistakes
Using salicylic acid twice a day and adding tranexamic acid every time can leave the skin raw. Start the acid every other night and keep tranexamic acid daily. Avoid covering large areas of the body with high-strength salicylic acid products: a dermatology review warns that salicylism, a form of poisoning, can rarely occur from topical use and can even be fatal (Madan 2014). Facial use of a 2% product is not the scenario in those reports, but stacking body peels and leave-ons is.

Which can also go on every morning.
Go slower if
Ask a doctor before using salicylic acid if you are pregnant or plan to treat large areas of skin (Madan 2014). Stop the acid if your skin cracks or stings for more than a few minutes.
Evidence strength
Limited for the pair. Salicylic acid has guideline support for acne (Reynolds 2024), and tranexamic acid has a meta-analysis for melasma (Calacattawi 2024). No trial studies them together.

Does salicylic acid help tranexamic acid work?
Not shown. No trial has measured whether an acid step changes how tranexamic acid works.
Can I use a 2% BHA and tranexamic acid every day?
Many people can, but daily acid makes irritation more likely. Every other night is a safer start.
Is salicylic acid good for melasma?
The 2024 guideline covers acne, not melasma. For melasma, tranexamic acid is the ingredient with trial data here.
Do I need sunscreen with salicylic acid?
The FDA page says salicylic acid products should include sunscreen or directions for daily sun protection when sun sensitivity is expected.
