Can you use retinol with urea?
The chemistry
Retinol is converted in the skin into retinoic acid, which is why it works more gently and slowly than prescription tretinoin, and why dryness and flaking are its most common side effects in the early weeks (Mukherjee 2006). In a randomized, vehicle-controlled trial in elderly volunteers, 0.4% retinol lotion applied to one arm for 24 weeks improved fine wrinkling compared with the lotion base on the other arm (Kafi 2007). Urea is part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. A review describes it as a moisturizer at 10% or lower and as a keratolytic, meaning it breaks down scale, above 10%. It also acts as a penetration enhancer, helping other ingredients get into the skin (Celleno 2018). That split decides how the pair behaves: a gentle urea cream replaces water that retinol dryness takes away, while a strong one adds a second peeling step. One case report gives a hint that the two can work in a single product. A 13-year-old with Darier disease, a genetic condition with rough papules, improved after two months of an over-the-counter cream containing retinyl palmitate, vitamin E and 20% urea, with no serious side effects. The authors suggest the urea helped the vitamin A ester reach the skin (Miyazaki 2022). That is one patient using a milder retinoid ester, not a trial of retinol on the face.
Chemistry
No known reaction between them. They have been combined in a single cream.
Irritation
Low with urea at 10% or less; higher strengths add exfoliation on top of retinol.
Order and wait
Retinol first on dry skin, urea moisturizer straight after. No timed gap needed.
Common mistakes
The usual misstep is grabbing a foot cream for retinol flakes. Products for heels and elbows often carry 20% to 40% urea, which is far into the strength where it dissolves scale, and on a face that is already adjusting to retinol that turns a little flaking into raw patches. Because urea also helps other ingredients get into the skin (Celleno 2018), a strong cream layered over retinol may make the retinol feel stronger than it is. Keep high-strength urea for the body, and use a facial urea moisturizer at 5% to 10%. If your face still peels after two weeks, cut retinol nights before you raise the urea.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Urea moisturizer, 10% or less
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanse and pat dry
- Pea-sized amount of retinol
- Urea moisturizer, 10% or less, straight after
Go slower if
Retinoids are usually avoided in pregnancy, so ask your doctor before using retinol if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Stop and see a doctor if your skin burns, swells or cracks.
Evidence strength
Limited. The plan rests on a clinical review of urea strengths (Celleno 2018), retinol's own trial and review data (Kafi 2007; Mukherjee 2006) and a single case report of a retinyl palmitate and urea cream (Miyazaki 2022). No trial has tested retinol and urea together on facial skin.

Does retinol go before or after urea cream?
Retinol first, on clean dry skin, then the urea cream on top as your moisturizer. No study has tested the order, so this follows the usual treatment-then-moisturizer rule.
Can urea help with retinol peeling?
A urea moisturizer at 10% or less hydrates the outer layer of skin, which is what flaky retinol skin needs (Celleno 2018). It will not stop peeling caused by using retinol too often.
Can I use 40% urea on my feet while using retinol on my face?
Yes, they are separate areas. Wash your hands after applying the foot cream so it does not end up on your face.
Are there products with both retinol and urea?
Yes. One case report used an over-the-counter cream with retinyl palmitate, vitamin E and urea (Miyazaki 2022). Read the urea strength on any combined product before using it on your face.
