Can you use retinol with moisturizer?
The chemistry
Retinol works in the skin to speed cell turnover, and the side effects people notice first are dryness, flaking and irritation. The American Academy of Dermatology advises starting retinol slowly, applying it to dry skin, and using a moisturizer to reduce those effects (AAD retinoid). Prescription tretinoin labels give similar instructions: wait until the skin is dry before applying it, and use a moisturizer as needed for dryness (tretinoin label). A moisturizer restores water and lipids in the outer layer; ceramide creams are a common choice. There is no chemical conflict, so the only real question is order.
Chemistry
No conflict. Moisturizer supports the barrier retinol irritates.
Irritation
Lower with moisturizer than without.
Order and wait
Retinol first, wait a few minutes until it has absorbed, then moisturizer.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is applying retinol to damp skin straight after washing, which can increase sting. Pat dry and wait a few minutes (tretinoin label). Another is skipping moisturizer to make retinol work harder; dryness is what makes many people quit. A third is using a rich moisturizer packed with acids or fragrance, which adds irritation. Keep the partner plain. Classic order: retinol on dry skin, wait a few minutes, moisturizer on top. Buffer or sandwich with cream first if you sting (AAD retinoid guidance). Plain, fragrance-free cream beats an acid night cream when you are adjusting. Daily build-up questions: /can-i-use-retinol-every-day/. Layering detail: /best-way-to-layer-retinol/. Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser, pat dry
- Retinol, pea-sized amount
- Wait a few minutes
- Moisturizer
Go slower if
Avoid retinoids in pregnancy unless your doctor approves (AAD retinoid). If skin peels badly, cut retinol to every other night.
Evidence strength
Moderate. The order follows AAD advice and drug-label instructions (AAD retinoid, tretinoin label). A trial in acne patients found adding a ceramide moisturizer to retinoid-based treatment was well tolerated and improved lesions (Tempark 2024). No trial compared moisturizer before versus after retinol.

Do I put retinol on before or after moisturizer?
Usually before, on clean dry skin, with moisturizer on top. If retinol irritates you, applying moisturizer first, often called buffering, is a reasonable option, though no study has compared the two orders.
How long should I wait between retinol and moisturizer?
A few minutes, until retinol has absorbed. The tretinoin label also asks you to wait until skin is dry before applying the retinoid (tretinoin label).
Does moisturizer make retinol work less?
It may slow absorption a little when used as a buffer, but no trial shows a loss of results.
Which moisturizer is best?
A plain, fragrance-free cream. In one acne trial a ceramide and niacinamide moisturizer was well tolerated with a retinoid (Tempark 2024).
What is the sandwich method with retinol?
Moisturizer, thin retinol, moisturizer again. Comfort first; absorption may be a little slower.
Do I moisturize in the morning after a retinol night?
Yes, then sunscreen. Retinol nights make daytime SPF non-negotiable.
Can my night cream contain glycolic acid with retinol?
Better not while adjusting. Keep the partner plain.
