Can you use retinol with clindamycin?
The chemistry
Clindamycin is a prescription antibiotic for acne. The Cleocin T label lists dryness, burning and itching as its most common skin reactions, and warns that the solution contains an alcohol base that will burn the eyes and other sensitive surfaces (Cleocin T label). Retinol is a cosmetic retinoid that the skin converts into retinoic acid, and its typical early side effects are also dryness, peeling and stinging (Mukherjee 2006). Neither label nor any study we could find tests clindamycin with retinol, so there is no proof of a chemical clash and no proof that layering is fine. The practical risk is stacked dryness. Acne guidelines support pairing a topical retinoid with other acne treatments, and they recommend combining topical antibiotics such as clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide to limit bacterial resistance rather than using the antibiotic alone (Reynolds 2024; Zaenglein 2016). Retinol is not one of the retinoids those guidelines are built on, which are prescription or over-the-counter acne retinoids, so if acne is the main goal, ask whether adapalene or tretinoin would serve you better.
Chemistry
No known reaction, but no study of the two together.
Irritation
Moderate. Both commonly cause dryness; the alcohol-based solution stings more.
Order and wait
Clindamycin in the morning, retinol at night, so no timed gap.
Common mistakes
The most common problem is treating clindamycin as the whole plan. Using a topical antibiotic alone for months encourages resistant bacteria, which is why guidelines pair it with benzoyl peroxide (Reynolds 2024). The second is applying both to wet skin right after washing and then adding an acid toner, which turns two drying products into three. If the alcohol-based solution stings around the nose and lips, the label notes there are gel and lotion forms too (Cleocin T label), and your prescriber can switch you. Prescriber rules win: clindamycin is often paired with benzoyl peroxide to limit resistance, and retinol is the leave-on texture step at night (Reynolds 2024; Cleocin T label). A practical home pattern is clindamycin as directed (often with peroxide in the same product or routine), retinol on dry skin at night, moisturizer after, sunscreen by day. Do not add a leave-on acid the same night you are already adjusting to retinol plus an antibiotic gel. Order map: /layering-order/. Retinol partner cream: /retinol-and-moisturizer/.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser
- Clindamycin as prescribed
- Moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser, pat dry
- Pea-sized amount of retinol, two or three nights a week at first
- Plain moisturizer
Go slower if
Clindamycin is prescription-only. The label says to stop and contact your doctor if you get severe or bloody diarrhea, which has been reported with topical clindamycin. Ask your doctor about both products if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Evidence strength
Limited. The routine relies on the Cleocin T label, a review of retinol side effects (Mukherjee 2006) and acne guidelines (Reynolds 2024; Zaenglein 2016). No study has tested retinol and clindamycin used together.
What we recommend
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
A fragrance-free moisturizer with no extra actives, to use after clindamycin and retinol have dried.

Does clindamycin go before or after retinol?
Use them at different times: clindamycin in the morning and retinol at night. If your prescriber asks for both at night, apply clindamycin first and let it dry. No study has tested the order.
Can I use retinol instead of a prescription retinoid with clindamycin?
You can, but the acne evidence is for acne retinoids such as adapalene and tretinoin. Retinol is mostly studied for aging skin (Kafi 2007).
Why do I need benzoyl peroxide with clindamycin?
Guidelines recommend it alongside topical antibiotics to reduce the chance of resistant acne bacteria (Reynolds 2024).
Is the clindamycin gel gentler than the solution?
The solution has an alcohol base that the label warns will burn the eyes and sensitive skin. Ask your prescriber about the gel or lotion if it stings.
Should clindamycin dry before retinol?
Yes. Apply clindamycin as labelled, let it dry, then retinol on dry skin, then moisturizer.
Can I use both every night from day one?
Build retinol slower if you are new to it. Clindamycin follows its own label or prescription schedule.
Where does benzoyl peroxide fit?
Often with the clindamycin product or as a separate wash. Keep an eye on dryness and moisturize. Guideline context: resistance risk rises when antibiotic is used alone (Reynolds 2024).
