Can you use minoxidil with rosemary oil?
Yes, you can use rosemary oil with minoxidil, with care, but no study has tested them together: the only trial compared them head to head, so if you add both, apply minoxidil to a dry scalp first, wait until it has fully dried, and use a diluted rosemary oil at a different time of day.12
The chemistry
Minoxidil is the standard over-the-counter hair-loss treatment, applied to the scalp at 2% or 5% strength. Rosemary oil comes from the herb Rosmarinus officinalis and has been studied as a plant alternative. In a randomized comparative trial, 100 people with androgenetic alopecia used either rosemary oil or 2% minoxidil for six months. Neither group showed a meaningful change in hair count at three months, both had a significant increase by six months, and the two groups did not differ from each other. Scalp itching rose in both groups but was more frequent with minoxidil (Panahi 2015). That trial used them separately and against weaker 2% minoxidil, so it tells you rosemary oil may help on its own, not that adding it to minoxidil gives extra hair.
Chemistry
No known conflict, but no study has used them together.
Irritation
Scalp itch was common with both in the trial; essential oils can also cause allergic reactions.
Order and wait
Minoxidil first on a dry scalp, let it dry fully, rosemary oil at the other end of the day.
Common mistakes
The usual mistake is swapping minoxidil for rosemary oil after a few weeks because nothing seems to happen. In the trial, neither treatment changed hair counts at three months; results only appeared at six (Panahi 2015). Another mistake is putting undiluted essential oil straight onto the scalp, which raises the chance of irritation. A third is oiling the scalp right before minoxidil, which can leave a greasy film that the minoxidil solution has to get through. Keep them apart and give whatever you choose half a year before you judge it.
Your routine
Morning
- Dry scalp
- Minoxidil as directed on the label
- Let it dry before styling
Evening
- Diluted rosemary oil massaged into the scalp, if you use it
- Wash out the next morning before minoxidil
Go slower if
Patch test rosemary oil on a small area first. Ask a doctor before using minoxidil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and see one if hair loss is sudden or patchy, because that is a different problem from pattern hair loss.
Evidence strength
Moderate for each alone, none for the pair. One randomized trial found rosemary oil and 2% minoxidil gave similar hair counts at six months (Panahi 2015). No study has tested them used together.
FAQ
Do I put minoxidil on before or after rosemary oil?
Minoxidil first, on a clean, dry scalp. No study has tested an order. We suggest keeping the oil to the other end of the day so it does not dilute or block the minoxidil.
How long should I wait between minoxidil and rosemary oil?
Let the minoxidil dry completely, which usually means a few hours if you plan to layer them. Using rosemary oil at night and minoxidil in the morning is simpler. No interval has been studied.
Is rosemary oil as good as minoxidil?
In one six-month trial it matched 2% minoxidil for hair count (Panahi 2015). It was not compared with 5% minoxidil.
How long before I see results?
Both groups in the trial needed six months to show a significant change (Panahi 2015).
