Can you use mandelic acid with moisturizer?
The chemistry
Mandelic acid is a larger aromatic AHA used for acne, tone and texture. In a comparative peel study, 45% mandelic acid peels matched 30% salicylic acid peels for mild-to-moderate acne with fewer side effects (Dayal 2020). An earlier trial found 20% salicylic plus 10% mandelic peels outperformed 35% glycolic peels for active acne and post-acne marks, again with better tolerability (Garg 2009). Those were spaced clinic peels, not nightly home layering. Leave-on mandelic serums still belong in the treatment step before moisturizer in the AAD order (AAD order). Like other AHAs, they fall under the FDA sun-sensitivity guidance (FDA AHA page; Kornhauser 2010). A plain cream afterward helps with dryness without adding a second acid.
Order
Mandelic leave-on, dry down, moisturizer.
Peels vs home care
Clinic peels are spaced; daily leave-ons need a gentler pace.
Sun
Daily SPF while using AHAs (FDA AHA page).
Common mistakes
Importing peel strengths into a nightly serum routine is the main mistake; Dayal and Garg studied professional peels weeks apart. Another is pairing mandelic acid with a second leave-on AHA or BHA every night, which recreates peel-level irritation at home. A third is skipping moisturizer on oily, acne-prone skin and ending up with tight, shiny patches that tempt more acid. Keep peel nights bare except a plain cream, and keep leave-on nights to one acid plus moisturizer unless a clinician designed a combo for you. Texture choice matters on acne-prone faces: a light gel cream after mandelic acid usually feels better than a heavy balm, and if one cheek peels more than the other, add cream there instead of stopping the acid everywhere. Mandelic acid is a larger AHA and often feels gentler than glycolic acid, but it still goes on dry skin before moisturizer and still needs daytime SPF (Dayal 2020; FDA AHA page). Plain cream after a short dry-down beats an acid-on-acid moisturizer stack. Useful when glycolic stung but you still want evening exfoliation a few nights a week. Map: /layering-order/.
Your routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanse
- Moisturizer if dry
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanse, pat dry
- Mandelic acid leave-on
- Wait until dry
- Plain moisturizer
Go slower if
Use sunscreen daily with AHA products (FDA AHA page). Patch test new serums (AAD test). Space professional peels as your clinician directs; do not stack them with home acids the same week without advice.
Evidence strength
Moderate for mandelic peels (Dayal 2020, Garg 2009) and for AHA sun advice (FDA AHA page, Kornhauser 2010). Home leave-on plus moisturizer order has not been trialled head to head.

Does mandelic acid go before or after moisturizer?
Before, as a leave-on on dry skin, with cream after it dries.
How long should I wait between mandelic acid and moisturizer?
A few minutes. No study has fixed a timer.
Is mandelic acid gentler than glycolic acid?
Peel trials often report fewer side effects than some alternatives (Dayal 2020, Garg 2009), but it still exfoliates.
Can I use mandelic acid with a moisturizer that has niacinamide?
Yes. Niacinamide is not an AHA; a plain or niacinamide cream is a common partner.
How long after mandelic acid before moisturizer?
A few minutes, until it feels dry.
Can I use mandelic acid every day with moisturizer?
Build up. Many people do well at three to five nights a week with a plain cream after.
Mandelic or glycolic with moisturizer if I am sensitive?
Mandelic is often the gentler first try, but patch test and keep sunscreen daily.
Where does this sit in a full routine?
Evening acid on dry skin, moisturizer after; morning moisturizer and sunscreen. Map: /layering-order/.
