Can you use hyaluronic acid with tranexamic acid?

Yes

Yes, hyaluronic acid and tranexamic acid pair well: use the tranexamic acid serum for pigment and hyaluronic acid as the hydrating layer, in whichever order puts the thinner liquid on first.1234

The chemistry

Hyaluronic acid is the skin's main water-holding molecule (Papakonstantinou 2012). In a randomized trial of 76 women, 0.1% hyaluronic acid creams used twice daily for 60 days around one eye improved hydration and elasticity compared with a plain cream around the other eye, and the two smallest molecular sizes also reduced wrinkle depth (Pavicic 2011). Tranexamic acid is used for melasma and dark patches. A meta-analysis of 22 randomized trials found it lowered melasma severity scores, though topical use showed a smaller effect than oral or injected forms, and skin irritation was among the reported side effects (Calacattawi 2024). In a split-face trial, 3% tranexamic acid cream matched 4% hydroquinone over 8 weeks in 20 people with mixed melasma (Yasnova 2024). A hydrating layer may make the mild irritation easier to tolerate, though this pairing has not been tested.

Chemistry

No reaction reported between the two.

Irritation

Low. Hyaluronic acid is a hydrator, not an active that stings.

Order

Thinnest first. Apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin, then moisturizer.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is expecting fast fading. Pigment trials of tranexamic acid ran eight weeks or longer, so check your progress over months. The second is skipping moisturizer: the trial creams were full creams, not a bare serum, so finish with one. The third is treating melasma without sun protection. Tranexamic acid does not replace sunscreen, so keep SPF every morning.

Your routine

Morning

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Tranexamic acid serum
  3. Hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin
  4. Moisturizer
  5. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+

Evening

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Tranexamic acid serum
  3. Hyaluronic acid serum
  4. Moisturizer

Go slower if

Topical tranexamic acid is not the same as the oral tablets, which in the trials brought side effects such as stomach upset and menstrual changes (Calacattawi 2024). If your melasma is spreading or you are pregnant, see a dermatologist before starting.

Evidence strength

Moderate for each alone: tranexamic acid has a meta-analysis of randomized trials (Calacattawi 2024) and hyaluronic acid a randomized cream trial (Pavicic 2011). There is no trial of the two together.

FAQ

Does hyaluronic acid help tranexamic acid absorb?

No study shows that. The hyaluronic acid trial measured hydration and wrinkles (Pavicic 2011).

Which hyaluronic acid size is best?

In the Pavicic trial, only the 50 and 130 kDa forms reduced wrinkle depth, while all sizes improved hydration.

Is topical tranexamic acid as strong as the pills?

The meta-analysis found oral tranexamic acid lowered melasma scores the most, then injections, then topical forms (Calacattawi 2024).

Can I use both twice a day?

Yes. Neither is an exfoliant, and many routines use them morning and night.
