Can you use hyaluronic acid with centella asiatica?
The chemistry
Centella asiatica, also called cica or gotu kola, contains compounds such as madecassoside and asiaticoside that have shown wound-healing, anti-inflammatory and collagen-supporting effects, mainly in lab and small clinical studies (Park 2021, Bylka 2013). Hyaluronic acid hydrates the outer layer (Papakonstantinou 2012). Together they suit skin that is red, tight or recovering from irritation, for example after over-exfoliation or during retinoid adjustment. There is no chemical conflict between them, and both are typically well tolerated. The appeal of combining them is that hyaluronic acid addresses tightness and dehydration immediately, while centella targets inflammation and repair over days. That is a useful split for skin that has been stripped by harsh cleansers, wind or cold, or by an enthusiastic use of acids.
Role
Soothing plus hydration.
Best for
Irritated, red or sensitised skin.
Evidence
Promising but mostly early for centella.
Common mistakes
Cica creams are widely sold as barrier repair products. Look for products listing madecassoside or Centella asiatica extract high in the ingredients. The hyaluronic acid can come from a separate serum under a cica cream. Allergy to centella is uncommon but reported, so patch test if your skin is very reactive. This pairing is supportive; it will not treat rosacea or eczema on its own. When building a recovery routine, cut back to cleanser, this pairing and sunscreen for one to two weeks, then reintroduce actives one at a time. Centella toners and serums are often thin and can be layered under hyaluronic acid or after it; order matters little. Watch for fragrance and essential oils in some cica products, which can undo the calming effect.
