Can you use benzoyl peroxide with tranexamic acid?
The chemistry
These two work on unrelated problems. Benzoyl peroxide is an over-the-counter acne drug that kills Cutibacterium acnes in the skin and hair follicles (Matin 2024), and the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology guideline gives it a strong recommendation for acne (Reynolds 2024). Tranexamic acid is studied for melasma and pigment. A meta-analysis of 22 randomized trials with 1,280 patients found it lowered melasma severity, with topical forms showing a smaller drop in scores than oral tablets or injections (Calacattawi 2024). Nobody has tested the two on the same face, so there is no data showing a clash and none showing a boost. The practical risk is dryness. The PanOxyl Drug Facts label warns that irritation and dryness are more likely when a second topical acne medication is added, and tranexamic acid trials report skin irritation as one of its side effects (Calacattawi 2024).
Chemistry
No reaction reported, and no study has combined them.
Irritation
Mostly from benzoyl peroxide. Tranexamic acid can sting a little on dry, cracked patches.
Order
Wash with benzoyl peroxide, rinse, pat dry, then tranexamic acid serum.
Common mistakes
The most common error is chasing post-acne marks while breakouts are still active, then stacking a brightening serum on raw skin from a strong leave-on gel. Treat the spots first, and if your face is peeling, use the benzoyl peroxide less often rather than adding more serum. The PanOxyl label itself says to start once a day and cut back to once daily or every other day if dryness becomes bothersome. Benzoyl peroxide can also bleach hair, towels and pillowcases (PanOxyl label), so a tranexamic acid serum applied over a leave-on gel at night can still leave white marks on fabric. Higher strength is not always better: in three double-blind studies, 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cut inflammatory spots about as well as 5% and 10%, and caused less peeling and burning than 10% (Mills 1986). A clear AM and PM split prevents the most common overload. Morning: benzoyl peroxide as a wash you rinse off, then tranexamic acid, moisturizer and sunscreen. Night: skip leave-on benzoyl peroxide at first, cleanse gently, apply tranexamic acid and moisturizer. If you prefer a leave-on gel, use it at night on dry skin and move tranexamic acid to mornings only so the two are not stacked on compromised skin. The PanOxyl label's advice to start once daily and cut back if dryness bothers you still applies when a brightening serum is in the routine (PanOxyl label). Judge pigment on an eight to twelve week clock, which is the window used in melasma trials of topical tranexamic acid (Yasnova 2024; Calacattawi 2024).
Your routine
Morning
- Benzoyl peroxide wash, massaged in for 1 to 2 minutes, then rinsed
- Tranexamic acid serum
- Moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser
- Tranexamic acid serum
- Plain moisturizer
Sample week
Benzoyl peroxide wash on the marked mornings, then tranexamic acid, moisturizer and sunscreen. On the other days use tranexamic acid morning and night with a gentle cleanse and no benzoyl peroxide. On the rest day keep moisturizer and sunscreen only if skin is dry.
Go slower if
Skip the benzoyl peroxide if you have very sensitive skin or know you react to it, as the label advises. Stop both and see a doctor if you get swelling, severe burning or itching. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the label says to ask a health professional before using benzoyl peroxide.
Evidence strength
Limited for the pair. Each ingredient has its own trials (Mills 1986; Yasnova 2024) and benzoyl peroxide is guideline-backed for acne (Reynolds 2024), but the combination itself is untested.

Will tranexamic acid fade acne marks while I use benzoyl peroxide?
The trials behind tranexamic acid were done in melasma, not post-acne marks (Calacattawi 2024), so we cannot promise it fades marks left by spots.
Should benzoyl peroxide be a wash or a leave-on with this routine?
A wash is easier to pair because it is rinsed off before the serum goes on. The PanOxyl label tells you to rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
Is 3% tranexamic acid strong enough?
In one split-face trial of 20 people with melasma, 3% tranexamic acid cream did about as well as 4% hydroquinone over 8 weeks (Yasnova 2024).
Do I need sunscreen with this pair?
Yes. The benzoyl peroxide label says to avoid unnecessary sun and use sunscreen, and sun drives pigment back.
What does a simple AM and PM split look like?
Morning benzoyl peroxide wash, rinse, then tranexamic acid, moisturizer and sunscreen. Night: gentle cleanse, tranexamic acid, moisturizer. That keeps the oxidizer and the brightener from sitting together for hours.
Can I use leave-on benzoyl peroxide at night and tranexamic acid in the morning?
Yes. That split is useful if a wash is not enough for your acne. Do not layer tranexamic acid over wet leave-on gel at night while skin is peeling.
Should I pause tranexamic acid when benzoyl peroxide is drying me out?
Yes for a few days if moisturizer stings or skin cracks. Keep a gentler benzoyl peroxide schedule, then restart tranexamic acid once the surface is comfortable.
Can I use both in the morning only?
A rinsed benzoyl peroxide wash followed by tranexamic acid is fine in the morning. Leave-on gel plus serum in one routine is more drying; split them if you peel.
How long before I judge dark marks?
Plan on eight to twelve weeks of steady sunscreen and tranexamic acid, matching the windows used in melasma trials (Yasnova 2024). Benzoyl peroxide's job is preventing new spots in the meantime.
