Can you use benzoyl peroxide with tea tree oil?
The chemistry
In a randomized trial of 124 people with mild to moderate acne, 5% tea tree oil gel and 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion both reduced inflamed and non-inflamed lesions; tea tree oil worked more slowly but caused fewer side effects (Bassett 1990). A placebo-controlled trial also found 5% tea tree oil gel effective for mild to moderate acne (Enshaieh 2007). However, tea tree oil is a recognised cause of allergic contact dermatitis from essential oils (Barbaud 2023). Benzoyl peroxide has stronger evidence and guideline support (Reynolds 2024).
Evidence
Benzoyl peroxide is better studied.
Allergy
Tea tree oil can cause contact dermatitis.
Routine
Alternate days rather than layering.
Common mistakes
If you are drawn to tea tree oil because benzoyl peroxide irritated you, try a lower strength benzoyl peroxide (2.5%) or a short-contact wash before giving it up. If you still want both, use them on different days, or keep benzoyl peroxide as your main treatment and tea tree oil gel only as an occasional spot treatment. Choose a finished product at around 5%; never use undiluted oil on the face. Oxidised (old) tea tree oil is more likely to cause allergy, so keep the bottle closed and away from light, and throw it out if it smells sharp. Patch test any new tea tree product on your inner arm for several days.
Your routine
Morning
- Benzoyl peroxide wash or gel (on benzoyl peroxide days)
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen SPF 30+
Evening
- Cleanser
- Tea tree oil 5% gel (on tea tree days)
- Moisturizer
Sample week
Alternate days, with a rest day. Many people do best with benzoyl peroxide alone.
Go slower if
Stop tea tree oil at once if you get itching, redness or blisters. Benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric.
Evidence strength
Strong for benzoyl peroxide (Reynolds 2024). Moderate for 5% tea tree oil in mild acne (Bassett 1990; Enshaieh 2007). Allergy risk is documented (Barbaud 2023). No trial of the two together.
