Can you use benzoyl peroxide with sulfur?

Yes, with care

Benzoyl peroxide and sulfur are both acne treatments and do not clash chemically, but both dry the skin, so split or alternate them rather than layering every day.123

The chemistry

Benzoyl peroxide is a first-line acne treatment that kills Cutibacterium acnes without causing antibiotic resistance (Zaenglein 2016; Reynolds 2024). Sulfur has antibacterial, antifungal and mild keratolytic (peeling) activity and has long been used for acne, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis, with mostly mild application-site reactions (Gupta 2004). Used together on the same skin at the same time, the drying effects add up.

Overlap

Both target acne bacteria; one strong drying step at a time.

Split

Benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning, sulfur spot or mask at night.

Fabric

Benzoyl peroxide bleaches towels and pillowcases.

Common mistakes

Sulfur is usually sold as a mask, a spot treatment or a wash, often at 3 to 10%, and sometimes combined with sodium sulfacetamide on prescription. Benzoyl peroxide comes as washes and leave-on gels from 2.5 to 10%. The easiest way to use both is to give each its own slot: a benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning, which you rinse off, and a sulfur spot treatment at night only on active spots. Another option is to keep benzoyl peroxide as your daily treatment and use a sulfur mask once or twice a week instead of on the same nights. Sulfur has a distinctive smell and can be drying, so it suits oily skin better than dry skin. If you are on a retinoid such as adapalene too, that is already a full routine; add sulfur only if you still need it.

Your routine

Morning

  1. Benzoyl peroxide wash
  2. Oil-free moisturizer
  3. Sunscreen SPF 30+

Evening

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Sulfur spot treatment on active spots
  3. Moisturizer

Sample week

Alternate days at first; once skin is settled you can try benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning and sulfur at night.

Go slower if

Stop and simplify if your skin peels, stings or turns red. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair, towels and clothing.

Evidence strength

Strong for benzoyl peroxide (Zaenglein 2016; Reynolds 2024). Moderate for sulfur, based on long clinical use and reviews (Gupta 2004). No trial tests these two together; the advice is based on their overlapping drying effects.
