Can you use benzoyl peroxide with moisturizer?
The chemistry
Benzoyl peroxide kills acne bacteria and is strongly recommended in the American Academy of Dermatology acne guideline (Reynolds 2024). Its common side effects are dryness, peeling and redness. The PanOxyl wash label tells users to start with one application a day and warns that it can bleach fabrics and hair (PanOxyl label). Moisturizer helps people stay on treatment. In an eight-week, double-blind, split-face trial of 40 people using 5% benzoyl peroxide and 0.1% adapalene, a ceramide and niacinamide moisturizer improved acne lesions more than a basic hydrophilic cream, and neither caused serious side effects (Tempark 2024).
Chemistry
No conflict with plain moisturizers.
Irritation
Moisturizer reduces dryness from benzoyl peroxide.
Order and wait
Leave-on gel first, a few minutes to dry, then moisturizer. Wash: rinse, then moisturize.
Common mistakes
People often skip moisturizer because their skin is oily, then quit benzoyl peroxide when it peels. A light, non-comedogenic lotion is enough. Another error is using a white pillowcase or towel; benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric (PanOxyl label). A third is using a moisturizer that contains other exfoliating acids on the same night. Leave-on gel and rinse-off wash are different schedules: gel dries a few minutes then cream; wash is rinsed, then moisturize straight away (PanOxyl label). The Tempark split-face trial is the best clinical support for staying on a ceramide-style moisturizer during benzoyl peroxide and adapalene use (Tempark 2024). Bleaching of fabric is a label warning, not a moisturizer conflict (PanOxyl label). For how peroxide sits next to retinoids and vitamin C across the day see /layering-order/.
Your routine
Morning
- Benzoyl peroxide wash, rinse well
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen SPF 30+
Evening
- Gentle cleanser
- Benzoyl peroxide gel on acne areas
- Wait a few minutes
- Moisturizer
Go slower if
Stop and seek care if you get swelling, hives or trouble breathing. Keep benzoyl peroxide away from eyes, lips and dyed fabric (PanOxyl label).
Evidence strength
Moderate. A double-blind trial supports using a moisturizer alongside benzoyl peroxide and adapalene (Tempark 2024). No trial has compared moisturizer before or after benzoyl peroxide.

Do I put benzoyl peroxide on before or after moisturizer?
Leave-on benzoyl peroxide goes first on clean dry skin, moisturizer after. If you sting, a thin moisturizer layer first can buffer it. No study has tested the order.
How long should I wait between benzoyl peroxide and moisturizer?
A few minutes, until the gel has dried. No interval has been studied.
Will moisturizer cause breakouts?
Pick a non-comedogenic one. In the trial a ceramide moisturizer improved lesions (Tempark 2024).
Is a benzoyl peroxide wash gentler?
It stays on the skin for less time, and the label suggests starting once a day (PanOxyl label).
Can I use a benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning and gel at night with moisturizer both times?
Yes if skin stays comfortable. Moisturize after the wash and again after the night gel once it has dried.
Should I buffer benzoyl peroxide with moisturizer first?
If you sting, a thin cream first is a reasonable comfort step. No trial has compared buffer versus peroxide-first.
Where does this sit next to adapalene or vitamin C?
Peroxide and adapalene often share a routine once tolerated; keep vitamin C in the other half of the day. Full map: /layering-order/.
Does moisturizer stop benzoyl peroxide working?
No evidence a plain cream cancels it once the gel has dried. In Tempark 2024 a ceramide moisturizer improved lesions alongside peroxide and adapalene.
